Tears of Kali

I still have the wide-eyed openness of a child with horror films (just as well), and even sat through a German horror film – Tears of Kali – last night that came to me without English subtitles and I didn’t understand a word of the dialogue. And yet, I loved it. Must have been made on a tiny budget, but it gave me the widdershins and I was genuinely uncomfortable being left alone to watch the final chapter. What the film makers did with shadows, subliminal flashes, quickly running reddish things, and a black leathery face between two wooden planks, got the Nevill salute. I may now watch all foreign horror films without subtitles for an extra layer of disorientating weirdness.
