FILM REC (and a half): WE ARE WHAT WE ARE: I’ve always been a big fan of regional American stories and noir, in books and films, so I enjoyed this exploration of a deeply buried taboo. Less of an action film, but as good as the same director’s STAKELAND in its own way. The ending made me gasp [AVOID SPOILERS, FOLKS].
I’m giving THE CONJURING half a recommendation: I’m probably the last person in the Anglo-sphere to have seen it, but I thought the first 50 minutes was a good homage to seventies horror. Stopping the film at that point would have left me with a much better impression of the film.
