Finding it hard to get my chin up after the news about Joel Lane, so I’m only nibbling online for a bit. But here’s a FILM REC for THE ECLIPSE.
I really liked this Irish ghost story about grief, guilt, thwarted desire, and a father’s responsibilities that must continue through the complexity of bereavement. The story is set around a literary festival, is well written and draws some terrific performances from the cast; the egotistical writer in the vortex of a midlife crisis, played by Aidan Quinn, being a real highlight. I’m pretty sure the supernatural horror element was not aimed specifically at a horror audience, which was probably an advantage, and was well done save for one little misstep to my mind. And so beautifully filmed it made me want to go and live in Cork.
